Karen’s Killer – Ride to Steiglitz with De Motts Road for good measure: Sunday, April 6th, 2013

140406 Steiglitz_0099webTen intrepid cyclists were all set to depart from Corio Library at 8:30 (after a pleasant extra hour’s sleep due to the end of Daylight Saving).  At 8:25 a phone call was received from Allan.  A puncture was holding him up – he’d join the ride at the Anakie Road roundabout.

John M rolled in at 8:30 (having added an extra hour of riding due to forgetting to reset his clocks) and the riders set off.  Less than 200m later a halt was called.  John had a puncture.  Kelly set off the let Allan know what was happening.  The riders (Karen – leading her first road ride as leader, John, Allan, Kelly, Rick, Mike C, David F, Shane, Terry T and Helen) finally set off at 8:55!

The ride to Steiglitz along Steiglitz Road is delightful – little traffic, undulating country and beautiful vistas of farmland, the You Yangs and Brisbane Ranges.  After Maude (no shop for a coffee break!) the ride descends to Sutherlands Creek, then it is up hill all the way to Steiglitz.  This was a challenge for many of the riders but there was more to come.

Helen and Shane had to forgo the ride to Anakie for coffee as they had to get back for other engagements and rode back on Steiglitz Road – which had a fair amount of shelter from the strengthening south easterly wind.

The eight remaining riders swooped through bush on the long downhill ride to Sutherlands Creek and then tackled the steep and unrelenting climb back to the top of the Brisbane Ranges before the long drop to Anakie for coffee.  The ride back to Geelong, despite the flatness of Ballan Road, would have been quite taxing with the strong head wind.

Congratulations to Karen who did a splendid job of leading the ride, and all the participants.

This morning 10 expert hill climbers rode and walked up Karen’s Killer ride (KK Ride) through the infamous Steiglitz hills and the infamous De Motts Hills. We enjoyed it so much, decided to make it an annual ride: Karen’s Steiglitz De Moots Challenge, otherwise known as the KK Ride. It’s destined to become an annual classic that may rival the infamous Shane’s Barabool Hill Classic. Start training now.
