Thanks to Robert, ride leader for this report and photos. Thanks also Robert for your quick thinking when all the bikes were not allowed onto the train.
Warrnambool-Tower Hill- Koroit Ride
Ten of us recently set off on a day’s cycling adventure to Warrnambool for a ride from Warrnambool Station to Koroit via the Rail Trail.
Nine of us traveled by train from Geelong and Waurn Ponds Station; One needed to take a vehicle due to the fact that all of the ten bikes couldn’t be transported on the Train Service.
On request, Dave Simpson ably led us to the Rail Trail and onwards towards Koroit. The track was in basic condition in some places due to recent rains and upgrades along the way. Overall, it was a lovely route with the trail winding through a range of farm lands. Part of the last section is a long, gradual climb towards Koroit.
On arrival at Koroit we found the local bakery where we enjoyed a break and lunch.
In departing Koroit, we cycled a road that ran along the side of the Post Office leading us to a T intersection and Tower Hill. A decision was made not to cycle down into the crater. Some wonderful sights were enjoyed from lookout points.
Following the sight seeing we high-tailed it back into Warrnambool via sections of the Rail Trail followed by the highway and streets in the City. Our destination? Pavilion Cafe and Bar, by Lady Bar, for refreshments before returning home by train; and car, for those who couldn’t get their bike on the train.
An enjoyable and safe ride was had by all.
