Steph and Geoff pedal The High Country Rail Trail

Thanks to Geoff for this report:

After our terrific and rewarding  week-end in Marysville -19th-20th March, Stephanie and I spent a few days in The High Country at Alexandra, near Eildon in perfect weather with vivid blue skies, no clouds, warm,  and no wind.!  The High Country is a fantastic part of Australia to visit with or without bikes in any season, everybody is so friendly and helpful no matter who you speak to.

We rode from the motel straight across the road to start the Rail Trail to the old historic and well preserved Alexandra  railway station which was interesting.  We continued riding about 6 kms uphill to Eglinton Gap where the views to Cathedral Peak and Range and with Lake Mountain in the distance were absolutely stunning.  See photos below.

Once over the top we had a brief stop at Koriella before an exhilarating down hill ride to Cathkin, about 7kms. We were careful as there was a bit of soft bark & leaves on the compacted fine gravel trail !!20160321_144722acr edit

It was a flatish ride to Yarck where the general store was busy making excellent bacon & egg  toasted sandwiches & good coffee. It was interesting to watch the many cars & caravans speeding on the  narrow Maroondah Hwy towards Mansfield at a break neck pace at 110-120kmph !!

As the road was far too narrow we drove to Eildon for the day & explored the area & the Dam on foot  etc. We rode our bikes everyday somewhere on the Rail Trail in one direction or another. marysville 2016 074acr edit

We picked the very best of the late summer weather – a fabulous 5 days away !
