Hot on the heels of the most successful Bendigo trip, plans are well underway for a weekend’s cycling in the Central Goldfields near Maryborough. Two possible dates are October 3rd and 4th and 31st October/1st November (Melbourne Cup weekend). There are already sixteen people interested for this tour, based at the excellent Lake Laanacoorie Lakeside Caravan Park. Two days cycling will include visits to places like Maldon, (day one) and Tarnagala, Moliagual, Avoca and, if time permits Maryborough (day two) before returning to Geelong.
Support cars and the club bike trailer will carry luggage and provide a ‘sag’ for anyone who needs a breather. The route chosen is on sealed quiet country roads, with plenty of history. For example, Maldon is a historic town which celebrates its gold rush heritage, and the ride passes through Moliagul, the home of The Welcome Stranger – the largest nugget ever found, weighing in at over 71kg. If you find another like this, it might be a bit hard to carry on the bike. The support vehicle will carry it for you (for a cut of the proceeds, of course). Smaller nuggets will probably fit in the saddle bag. Call for those interested.
