If you didn’t already know, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race is this Sunday – February 1st. The race is being broadcast live on Channel 7 from 11am till 4pm, so if you can get TV on your phone (or other device) you might like to watch while you attend Cycling Geelong’s picnic.
The picnic is any time from 11:30 at Zillah Crawcour Park on the Newtown side of the Barwon beside Queen’s Park Bridge. BYO food and drink. Parking will be very limited – and the road closes at 12:45 and re-opens at 4:00pm. Your best option is to come by bike along the river path (Balyang Sancuary car park and West Fyans Street car park and area are unaffected by road closures).
Our Cadel Evans GOR Road Race Spectators Ride leaves from Zillar Crawcour Park at 11:30 for a hilltop view on Barrabool Road. It’s a medium grade ride of 38km.
Ride the river path to Fyansford, then along Hamilton Highway to Pollocksford Road. Long steady climb to Barrabool Road then a lovely ride towards Geelong, stopping either near the Barrabool Road/Hendy Main Road intersection or at the top of the last hill before the descent to Merrawarp Road. (Bring a snack and drink to enjoy while you wait.)
Watch the race as the cyclists are sorted out by the uphill sweep. After the race passes – follow the support cars down to Merrawarp Road and return to the park to watch the final laps and enjoy your picnic.
If for some reason you can’t make it to the picnic, or the ride, you can still catch the live broadcast on Channel 7 11am till 4pm. For lots more information go to Geelong Advertiser’s cycling page .
