Kayaking along the Barwon one evening I got talking to an elderly lady walking her dog up near the rapids. Not knowing I was a cyclist too she talked to me about some of the difficulties she has coexisting with cyclists on the track.
What would make life easier for elderly people, she said, was if we would call out as well as ringing our bell. She found cycle bells not so easy to hear as a projected human voice.
So let’s remember to call out to walkers on tracks as we get close to them – something like ‘passing on the right’ or ‘coming through’.
